Feedback in Arts

... concept, classification, history, and examples

Introduction

definition 1. the return to the input of a part of the output of a machine, system, or process (as for producing changes in an electronic circuit that improve performance or in an automatic control device that provide self-corrective action)
2. a the partial reversion of the effects of a process to its source or to a preceding stage
b the transmission of evaluative or corrective information to the original or controlling source about an action, event, or process; also : the information so transmitted
  - Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary

1. the return of a portion of the output, or processed portion of the output, of a (usually active) device to the input
2. information returned as a response to an originating source
  - Federal Standard 1037C, Institute for Telecommunication Sciences

Classification:
points of view

closed-loop vs. open-loop open-loop control offers some advantages

positive vs. negative * If the feedback is regenerative (additive), it is called "positive feedback," which increases gain and distortion, and decreases linearity and stability.
* If the feedback is degenerative (subtractive), it is called "negative feedback," which reduces the gain and distortion, and increases linearity and stability.

feedback vs. feedforward feedback and feedforward control
feedforward for faster control response
video feedforward

by whom? by machine: temperature control system
by human: driving
between human: conversation

History a brief history of feedback control

1. the preoccupation of the Greeks and Arabs with keeping accurate track of time
2. the Industrial Revolution in Europe
3. the beginning of mass communication and the First and Second World Wars
4. the beginning of the space/computer age.
