One of the Macintoshes runs SuperCollider, a programming language and environment for audio signal processing and music. Programs that generate sounds for the installation are written in SuperCollider. The interface for the installation interacts with SuperCollider using the OpenSoundControl (OSC) protocol for transmitting musical information over the network.
The output from this Macintosh is sent to the amplifier which is connected to the speakers located in the space. The other Macintosh also gets a feed of the output which it broadcasts it to the Internet using QuickTime to encode the stream into an MP3 format.
