There are currently estimated 5 petabytes of sound recordings either in digital archive vaults or in preparation for preservation!

Until recently, archiving was a difficult pursuit, since the physical media employed were very expensive and decayed very rapidly unless they were placed in strictly-controlled environments.

With the advent of the Internet, extreme communication bandwidth, and cheap magnetic media storage, many sound archivists argue that the key to preservation has shifted views.

Instead of localizing original sound recording, which is costly and dangerous, preservation should be performed through migration of sounds to many different archival locations.
