CONCEPT DEFINITONS AND ARGUMENTS

The Bio-logue installation explores several related concepts regarding communication and interaction:

  • Control vs. non-control of a system
  • Biological essence of being human
  • Computer as facilitator, moderator, and translator of a "forum"
  • Redefine the concept of communication and interaction

NORMAL COMMUNICATION / INTERACTION

Normal communication operates via conscious means: We dance, we paint, we talk/listen, and we use our muscles.

Normal human/computer interaction is done through muscle control: key presses, mouse movements, and touch screens.

AUTONOMIC PROCESSES

Autonomic processes are body functions/attributes not normally under our control: Pulse rate, breathing, height, weight, CO2 production, digestive system

AUTONOMIC COMMUNICATION?

If removed of our primary communication mechamisms, could we communicate and express ourselves via purely autonomic means? If so, what form would these interactions and expressions take?

Likewise, could we interact with a computer purely based on processes beyond our control? Would the user feel in control of the system, even though he/she has no direct control of autonomic processes?
