Scientists at WIPP are currently testing various pictograms on people from far-flung cultures to find some that are as universally legible as the "man" sign on an airport restroom. The DOE's quest for universal symbols has lead to caricatures of human suffering, including one image that recalls Edvard Munch's "The Scream."
