The icons of skull, human face and transition from life to death narratives are used in making of the main visual sign for the WIPP. The idea of a 'double-face' is not new, it has many cultural references. But it always 'works' to show a border or a contrast between life and death, human and machine etc. It is a symbolic icon. It conveys dynamic meaning: one half always communicates with another. It does not symbolize tomb but the place or the moment of transition from life to death.
This sign is going to be used in addition to numerous other textual and pictorial messages. But we suggest it to be the main one for it communicates the most important information in the most effective way. All signs have a certain period of time when they are being taken seriously. We are not afraid of the skulls in the walls of mexican pyramids because they are 'out of date'. That is why we propose the idea of a dynamic sign and dynamic message.
