As a reconstructed audio environment, Welcome requires a high level of control over external sounds bleeding into the installation space. A second floor floating on rubber bearings, false walls padded with acoustic tiles, and a false ceiling suspended by acoustic ceiling hangers will provide sufficient sound isolation. An apartment at ground level will lack sounds that originate below the apartment, though a floating floor will still be necessary to dampen vibrations traveling through the foundation from adjacent apartments.
The audio environment the audience experiences will rely on Wave Field Synthesis (WFS), a technique that uses multiple point sources to reconstruct wave fronts that appear to originate from virtual point sources either within or outside of the listening space. The current WFS techniques only operate in a two-dimensional plane; some research will be necessary to extend this into three dimensions for our purposes.
