Overview |
|
The process and form of "The
Shape of Discourse" mirrors the concept: to produce a spatial visualization
that is a hybrid between engineering, art, and design. The form of the polytope,
a connected set of nodes (or points) in space, metaphorically and materially
relates to contemporary interdisciplinary scholarship: the internet, which
is a network just like the cuboctahedron, serves as a vast channel of communication
that has the potential open exchange beyond the boundaries of traditional
institutions. The division of knowledge into specialized disciplines often
distances what can be (and perhaps should be) related fields of inquiry.

|
"The Shape of Discourse"
visualizes the degree of connectedness of a list of sixty-four architects
in two ways: as a three-dimensional, dynamically clustering assortment of
cuboctahedrons and as a two-dimensional map of interconnected lines. The
project does not attempt to reveal a truth about these people on the list,
but instead to create a fictional platform of discourse that playfull investigates
a potential avenue of research in the field of data visualization. |
