The Media Arts and Technology Program at UCSB presents "soft AI+M", our 2024 End of Year Show, in two events:
513 Garden St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101
This year we celebrate 25 years as a program, and share its student research work, including projects in new media, electronic music, robotics, artificial intelligence, and computational crafts, tools and design.
Community members are invited to attend both exhibitions. Admission is free.
The first event takes place at Elings Hall in CNSI (California NanoSystems Institute) at UCSB on Wednesday, June 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. This will highlight the work of MAT's labs and the AlloSphere, featuring a performance of Always, a composition by world-renowned computer music pioneer and Professor Curtis Roads.
Free Parking in Lot 10 after 5 pm.
The second event takes place at SBCAST (Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology) at 531 Garden Street) on “First Thursday,” June 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. This will highlight the collaboration of the MAT Alloplex Studio/Lab@SBCAST with the SBCAST and Santa Barbara creative community. Live music will feature the MAT Create Ensemble, and large-scale projection-mapping will be presented after dark.
This year’s show theme explores the encounter of current cutting-edge developments in media arts with the rapidly developing challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Projects which relate generative computation, expressive fabrication, robotics, and electronic music to AI, cognitive science, and neurobiology will be presented.
"As our world becomes increasingly transformed by emerging artificial intelligence and related technologies, we’re finding ways to fuse much-needed elements of softness and humaneness and beauty with the lucid rigor of science and engineering, helping to navigate creatively what might otherwise become a harsh transition." - MAT Chair Marcos Novak
